My guess is that someone at Blizzard really enjoyed Kid Icarus: Uprising, and the little cartoon shorts that came out before it (there was one that involved living carrots).
I think the mouseover text is a reference to Arthur Dents visit to The resturant at the end of the universe, where todays special waddles in to demonstrate its prime cuts still in situ.
And yes, that pet is somewhat disturbing. Nonetheless, I must own one. Or two.

What I’ve learned from the comments is that Blizz didn’t rip off anyone specific and this is apparently a commonly used thing.
As though that blasted Singing Sunflower wasn’t terrifying enough, Blizzard.
